I am looking forward to Part 2. Millie I can only imagine the sorrow you went through losing this beautiful child Samantha. You are such a strong lady to share the story of Samantha with the world and I as a reader appreciate and love to hear of what Samantha meant to you, George and all the community of Fleur De Lys. She was a very special person, and so are you Millie for sharing her story.

  5. George, I remember those events so clearly. Like so many people across Newfoundland and Labrador, I was captivated by the disappearance of Samantha Walsh and devastated when we learned that she had been murdered. As a parent, I couldn’t help but feel profound anguish for her family as they faced the unimaginable loss of their 13 year old daughter. 26 years later, I still think of Samantha often. I have never been able to hear Saltwater Joys without thinking of her.

Much of the public focus after that tragedy was on Michael, the boy who took her life, his sentencing, and the broader questions surrounding our justice system. From time to time I found myself wondering how Samantha’s parents were coping. Having lost my own sister in a car accident when she was 17, I often thought of my mother and tried to imagine the depth of their grief. What I never knew was Samantha’s legacy, how the people of Fleur de Lys carried her memory forward, and the creation of Samantha’s Salt Water Joys Museum and Cafe. Learning about these acts of love and remembrance has been incredibly moving.

This series is a beautiful tribute to Samantha’s life and memory, and I can’t think of anyone better suited to tell this story than you. Having experienced the loss of your brother, you understand firsthand how deeply the death of a loved one can affect an entire family. Although the circumstances were different, I imagine that shared experience of profound loss helped you relate to Millie in a deeply personal way and allowed the two of you to have the kind of intimate conversation that gives this series such authenticity and heart.

Part 1 was captivating, and I genuinely can’t wait to read the next chapter of Samantha’s story.

Thank you George for bringing Samantha’s memory back to the forefront, for shining a light on the remarkable legacy her family and community have created in Fleur de Lys, and for sharing your own perspective as you seek to understand how something so heartbreaking could happen in a place like theirs.
