The holiday season is filled with glitter, lights, and well wishes. Yet, there are many who find this time of year difficult.

For those caught up in the joy, cheer and celebration, with bellies full, loved ones gathered, and hopeful relaxation looming (OK, I know it’s friggin’ madness”) However, for some thoughts, feelings, and yes triggers, abound.  In the midst of a gathering of family and friends, someone may find the “cheerful” antics too much for them. We may hear “sure what do you have to be sad and depressed about?” They may be lost in thoughts of missing a loved one who has passed, or traumatic events may be triggered by a smell or sound.  This is very real. The greatest gift you can give anyone who is struggling in any way is acceptance, to be without judgement.

“Peace on earth”, isn’t that how the story goes.  The fact remains, there are parts of the world that are mired in turmoil, families who are displaced and adjusting. The hold of addiction does not take a break during the holiday season rather it can rear its ugly head moreso. The stigma of incarceration lingers for any family members who have been in prison or has had a loved one locked up. For far too many children, their Christmas is impacted by domestic violence. For them, a days without screaming and threats is alike a holiday.

Thoughts that affect our mental wellness, traumatic events that linger, are not a choice. It is not like turning a switch on or off. They are part of reality. As you celebrate, please remember people do so in differing way; some of us in a quiet reflective way as that is how we cope. Be good to each other.
